The UK Centre for Ecology and Hydrology (UKCEH), are running a trial comparing the suitability of different rice varieties for production on rewetted land in the UK. The trial at Oxwillow, Mount Pleasant Farm, north of Ely in Cambridgeshire was featured on BBC news yesterday and on the BBC news website.
This pioneering work could open new possibilities for UK-grown rice and sustainable farming on peatlands and is part of a broader trial examining the suitability of different crops for cultivation on rewetted peat, as well as other land use options like bioenergy crops, hybrid willow, and biodiversity projects such as wet woodland.
The rice trials research is part of the AgZero+ project, which is jointly funded by the NERC: Natural Environment Research Council and the BBSRC.
