Socio-Economic and Climate and Environmental Aspects of Paludiculture (Paludi4All)
Paludi4All is a Horizon Europe project that explores the socio-economic, environmental, and climate aspects of paludiculture. Through an interdisciplinary and innovation-driven approach, the project assesses the potential of paludiculture to mitigate climate change, protect ecosystems, and create new opportunities for jobs and income in rural areas. By bringing together experts, practitioners, and stakeholders across Europe, Paludi4All aims to develop and promote scalable solutions for the upscaling of paludiculture.
Project aims
Paludi4All aims to support the climate, nature restoration and carbon farming objectives of the EU by facilitating the development of paludiculture via innovative solutions arising from a network of practitioners and researchers.
The project supports the sustainability transition of paludiculture by pursuing the following specific objectives:
-
Enhance understanding of the economic implications of paludiculture for farms and society.
-
Develop a comprehensive market perspective to support viable and competitive paludiculture value chains.
-
Accelerate the upscaling of paludiculture in Europe through socially and stakeholder-driven approaches.
-
Improve knowledge on the environmental impacts and potential of paludiculture for climate change mitigation and ecosystem restoration.

Greifswald University (UG), - Germany
UG has an outstanding research tradition in peatlands and paludiculture. Together with its partner, the Greifswald Mire Centre, which pools the expertise on conservation, restoration and sustainable use of peatlands of approx. 130 peatland experts from various disciplines. Over the last more than 25 years, UG has carried out numerous research projects, investigating various aspects of paludiculture, such as establishment, harvesting techniques and logistics, processing options and profitability to climate, biodiversity and socio-economic impacts.

The Johann Heinrich von Thünen Institute (TI) - Germany
TI is a federal research institution under the German Federal Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Regional Identity (BMLEH). In Paludi4All, it contributes expertise in peatland protection and the establishment of paludiculture for sustainable land use. Specifically, the Institute of Rural Studies provides social science and socioeconomic expertise on socio-ecological transformations, while the Institute of Climate-Smart Agriculture offers expertise in GHG and nutrient fluxes, hydrology, and organic soil research in Paludi4All.

Stichtig Radboud Universität (SRU), - Netherlands
SRU brings extensive expertise in environmental and ecological sciences, covering life cycle assessment, sustainability and system analysis, agricultural science, and soil science. Within Paludi4All, SRU leads the research on assessing environmental impacts of paludiculture and focusses on life cycle assessment and current and future potential of
European paludiculture.
Luonnonvarakeskus (Luke) - Finland
Luke, the Natural Resources Institute Finland, operates under the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry of Finland. Its mission is to promote competitive business based on the sustainable use of renewable natural resources, as well as well being and the vitality of the countryside. Within Paludi4All, Luke analyses when and how the adoption of paludiculture makes economic sense for a farmer and develops recommendations and policy messages to support transition.

Scotland's Rural College (SRUC) - United Kingdom
SRUC is a public research and education institution specialising in agriculture and life sciences. In Paludi4All, SRUC investigates what actions could speed up the upscaling of paludiculture based value chains, and how farmers and landowners think about rewetting for paludiculture production.

Instytut Technologiczno-Przyrodniczy - PIB (ITP - PIB) - Poland
ITP – PIB is a scientific research organization focused on various aspects of technology and nature, particularly in the fields of agriculture, rural development, and environmental conservation. Within Paludi4All, ITP-PIB collects GIS data on degraded peatlands and evaluates paludiculture potential, considering environmental, spatial, and legal factors.
